Links to newspaper articles: Unusual Saratoga County primary -- Times Union Blog Pat Southworth, the Ballston Democratic chairman whose wife, Patti Southworth, is the town supervisor, will challenge Shawn Thompson for a spot on the state Democratic Committee. Thompson, deputy secretary to Sen. Malcolm Smith, D-St. Albans, the Senate Democratic leader, was formerly chairman of the Saratoga Springs Democratic committee. Although it was Thompson who oversaw the Dems sweep of City Council in 2005 - an achievement that was undone two years later - Southworth said he doesn't represent "rank and file" Democrats. Southworth said he submitted 1,573 signatures from voters in the 110th Assembly district. Southworth has taken on Thompson once already, according to Saratoga County chairman Larry Bulman, Southworth ran against Thompson for county vice chair, but lost. Bulman supports Thompson "because of his fine work on behalf of the party for many years." The men will be on the primary ballot in September in the 110th Assembly district. |
